Szanto 2253

The last of Bert’s current review series takes a closer look at the Szanto 2253 chronograph.

Szanto is a recent watch company developed by one of the founders of the Luminox brand.  Pronounced sahn-tow, the company’s watch designs were inspired by vintage designs from the “Golden Age of Travel” updated to modern watch standards of performance and size.  There are currently at least 17 series of watches under the Szanto name.  The watch for this review comes from the 2200/2250 series of 5 models and is the model 2253.

The watch is 46mm in diameter and uses a 3 eye Miyota/Citizen 0S20 quartz  chronograph movement with a circular black on white date window at 4:30. The watch is rated a more than adequate 5 atm/50 meters for water resistance. The movement is rated + or – 20 seconds a month, but my example has been far more accurate at about 2 seconds per month.  The usual pushers are at 2 and 4 o’clock with the crown at 3 o’clock. The face is a bronze sunburst finish with all markings and hands in a pale yellow color.  The watch is lumed on all markers, the two dots at 12 o’oclock and five of the six hands, the exception being the chronograph second hand. Detailing includes small delicate concentric circles in the 24 hour dial and the 60 minute cumulative dial and a tachymetre scale around the perimeter of of the face.  The much smaller second hand dial at 6 o’clock balances out the design nicely.

The screw down engraved back matches the IP titanium plating finish of the case.  With a domed mineral crystal and distressed leather strap with matching signed clasp, the watch is very handsome, in my eyes.  Even the nicely sized gear tooth edged crown is tastefully signed.  The only thing I might change for my taste would be the strap to a smooth soft brown leather design, which should be easy to do.

All in all this is a very attractive, accurate and comfortable chronograph with a great vintage design.  I have not seen another watch brand that does this type of watch as well at this price point.  Check out the complete line of Szanto watches at  $350 MSRP.
