About half a year ago, we got this cool, limited edition watch, the Davosa Ternos Sixties Faded Blue Seahorse Special US Edition, from Davosa USA to check out and share our thoughts on it with you guys. Davosa USA is the go-to place for Davosa Swiss watches in the States. We’re guessing a bunch of you already know about Davosa, but for those who don’t, let’s dive into what makes Davosa pretty awesome.
Davosa Swiss is a renowned watch brand with a rich heritage that dates back to the 19th century. Originating from Switzerland, a country synonymous with precision and craftsmanship in watchmaking, Davosa Swiss has carved out a distinct identity in the world of horology. Known for their meticulous attention to detail, Davosa Swiss watches are a blend of traditional Swiss watchmaking techniques and contemporary design aesthetics.
Davosa Swiss timepieces are known for their solid construction, practicality, and refined appearance. The brand is recognized for its mechanical watches, featuring detailed movements and reliable accuracy. They offer a variety of designs to suit different preferences, including both traditional and contemporary styles. This range of options means there is a Davosa Swiss watch suitable for various settings, including formal events, casual activities, or outdoor adventures.
One of the standout features of Davosa Swiss watches is their build quality. They use high-grade materials like high-tech stainless steel, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and premium leather straps, ensuring longevity and resilience. Moreover, many of their models are equipped with deep water-resistant capabilities, making them suitable for sports and water activities.
Davosa Swiss also places a high value on innovation. They continuously evolve their technology and design, integrating features like power reserve indicators, moon phase complications, and chronographs. This commitment to innovation keeps them at the forefront of the watch industry.
Davosa Swiss emphasizes commitment and passion in their craft. Their watches serve not only as timekeepers but also as an expression of personal style and an appreciation for Swiss watchmaking. Suitable for both watch aficionados and those who value skilled craftsmanship, a Davosa watch offers a classic and enduring choice for any collection.
Davosa USA, which we previously mentioned as the official distributor of Davosa Swiss watches in the United States, launched two exclusive limited edition models about two years ago. These were part of the Seahorse Special US Edition. One of these, the Ternos Sixties Faded Blue Seahorse Special US Edition, was reviewed on this site six months ago. The second model, which we are excited to delve into today, is the Ternos Sixties Golden Seahorse Special US Edition.
Both of these exquisite timepieces belong to the Davosa’s Sixties collection, a series that pays homage to the classic dive watches of the 1960s. Their design, heavily influenced by this era, is noticeable in the dimensions and aesthetics of the watches. Each casing is 40mm in diameter and 12mm in height, boasting a sleek and elegant case and bezel design that subtly nods to their retro origins.
The Ternos Sixties Golden Seahorse Special US Edition is particularly striking. It features a black bezel accented with a gold-tone diving scale and a distinctive red triangle at the 12 o’clock position. Gold tones are a prominent theme throughout the watch, from the hands, indexes, and dial writings, all unified in this luxurious hue. For enhanced visibility in low light conditions, the indexes are filled with Super-LumiNova, which looks amazing at night. The watch also features a lollipop-shaped seconds hand.
Like its counterpart, the Ternos Sixties Faded Blue Seahorse, the Golden Seahorse’s minute hand extends nearly to the edge of the dial, almost ‘brushing’ against the case. This vintage flair extends to the bracelet as well. Both models come with a riveted bracelet, further enhancing their classic, timeless appeal and adding to the overall vintage charm of these exceptional watches.
Davosa presents this watch with a metal bracelet as standard, but for those who favor leather straps, there’s the option to customize with a variety of high-quality leather straps available in different colors. The model we received for review was equipped with a metal bracelet, which we found exceptionally comfortable on the wrist and easy to wear throughout the day.
The caseback of the watch is a work of art. On the reverse side, Davosa has masterfully engraved a seahorse, intricately incorporating the American flag into its design. The craftsmanship is exceptional, symbolizing the seamless blend of two realms: the aquatic, represented by the seahorse, and the patriotic, denoted by the American flag. This artistic fusion pays tribute to both the marine world and American heritage. Curious about the choice of the seahorse, we inquired with Davosa when we reviewed the faded blue Seahorse. They explained that the seahorse is regarded as one of the ocean’s most noble creatures, admired for its small size, uniqueness, and captivating beauty.
The DAV3021 movement found in these watches is based on the Sellita SW200-1 calibre, a highly respected and widely utilized Swiss movement. This calibre is a favorite among various watch manufacturers due to its reliability and ease of maintenance. One of the benefits of Davosa using the SW200-1 is its serviceability; in the rare event of an issue, most local watchmakers will be familiar with this movement and capable of repairing it.
However, it’s worth noting that the SW200-1 is renowned for its robustness and dependability. It’s often referred to as the backbone of the Swiss watch industry, particularly since ETA restricted the sale of its calibres to third-party brands. The SW200-1’s reputation as a sturdy and reliable workhorse means that problems are unlikely to occur.
In the unlikely event of any issues, Davosa USA provides a reassuring safety net with a 2-year warranty on all their watches. This warranty, combined with the renowned reliability of the SW200-1 movement, should give owners peace of mind and confidence in their investment.
The Ternos sixties golden seahorse watch, crafted by Davosa USA, stands out as a remarkable piece of workmanship, combining excellent quality with a touch of vintage charm. The watch’s design pays homage to classic styles, featuring an aluminum bezel, a distinctively styled rivet bracelet, and a thoughtfully designed dial. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the watch boasts an advanced mechanism, underlined by the confidence of a two-year warranty.
Just like the previous model in the series that we reviewed on this site, the Faded Blue Seahorse, this watch presents a compelling package. It’s not only affordable but also offers exceptional value, arguably even more so than other watches in the Davosa range. For those considering between the two models in the series, the new watch we reviewed here definitely makes a strong case for itself. It skillfully blends quality, style, and value, making it a standout choice in the Davosa collection.
During our week-long journey with this watch, we traveled from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and then on to the Grand Canyon. It was a constant companion as we navigated the vibrant casinos on the Las Vegas Strip and journeyed through Arizona to marvel at the Grand Canyon. The watch proved to be exceptionally comfortable on the wrist, and quite honestly, it garnered a lot of attention and admiration. Its gold accents imparted a luxurious flair, sparking curiosity from many who inquired about the watch’s brand and cost.
The comfort of wearing this watch was so remarkable that it almost felt like a natural extension of ourselves; we barely noticed it was there. However, its presence was unmistakably felt by others. As our trip neared its end, and before we headed back to Los Angeles, we seized the opportunity to capture a memorable moment. At a restaurant overlooking the Grand Canyon, with the breathtaking view of the canyon as a backdrop, we took a photo of the watch. This snapshot not only highlighted the watch’s elegance but also encapsulated its journey through diverse landscapes and experiences, underlining its versatility and appeal in various settings, which we hope you could feel through our review.
Davosa Ternos sixties golden seahorse special US edition- Is it all Perfect?
While reviewing this watch, we encountered a few aspects that were less appealing. The primary point of contention is ironically its strongest feature: the design. It’s undeniable that this watch bears a striking resemblance to the Tudor Black Bay 58, serving as an almost flawless tribute to it. This similarity is so pronounced that it often leads to confusion, with many mistaking it for the Black Bay 58 itself. Whether this is a drawback is debatable. However, it’s notable that Davosa USA has done an exceptional job in creating this homage to the Black Bay 58. The craftsmanship is commendable, though some might view it as somewhat overdone.
Another aspect to consider is the water resistance of the watch. Priced slightly above $900, one might anticipate a water resistance in the range of 200-300 meters. However, Davosa USA has designed this watch with a water resistance of just 100 meters. While this may not be a significant issue for most users, as the deepest a typical person might dive is unlikely to exceed 3-5 meters, the expectation for a watch named ‘Seahorse’ might be a higher water resistance capability. This mismatch between the name and its water-resistant capacity is worth noting, although, once again, for 99.9% of the users 100 meters water resistant is more than enough.
To Sum It Up
If you’re comfortable with a watch that closely resembles the Tudor Black Bay 58 and offers a water resistance of “just” 100 meters, then the Davosa Ternos Sixties Golden Seahorse Special US Edition is an excellent choice. This elegantly designed watch represents significant value, especially given its price of under $1000, leaving room in your budget for additional purchases. You might consider using the extra funds to acquire an additional leather or nylon strap, offering you more style options when wearing this watch.
