As a watch reviewer, we are always fortunate sometimes to be approached by brand requesting for honest feedback and detailed review of the watch. This article is no different as the brand representative, Mr. Mario L. Agostini from Nordgreen, a pure Scandinavian brand from Denmark, approached us at MicrobrandWatchWorld for a written review of their newest model – Pioneer Chronograph

To be honest here, I have not heard of Nordgreen until I was approached and I did some googling about them. The brand Nordgreen was founded in 2017 by Pascar Sivam and Vasilij Brandt, and soon after joined by a Scandinavian designer, Jakob Wagner. The brand started off through a successful kickstarter campaign that managed to raise DKK1,495,496 (~ US$220k) with the support from 1,417 backers, making it a top 10 fashion watch in Europe back in January 2018. By end of 2018, the brand managed to sell more than 10,000 watches and from the feedback gathered, it’s being input into the next model. Amazingly, their next kickstarter campaign featuring 2 of the newest model – Pioneer & Native was a better success by raising US$428k with 2,890 backers (doubled up from their 1st campaign). Kudos to the brand and the team for a successful kickstarter campaign, something I must seek their advise on how did they do it.

Here’s my detailed review…

Case : I was sent the gun metal case with white dial version. I have to say, I’m really impressed by the balance of quality and built overall. The brush finishing is on the darker end, which aesthetically give a contrasting view against the pure matte white dial. Matching with the round shape case, the side chronograph pusher and crown maintained the round profile theme. On the caseback, it has the brand logo but more importantly on the center of it, a design that looked like a plant (leaf) that is growing from the ground which represents one of the brand’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) protocol by giving back to environment. Kudos to the brand and team for such initiative and philosophy.

Dial : I just love the minimalist concept on the dial, especially the pure matte white dial. I like how they designed the 2 subdial sunked down on the same dial, rather than using the sandwich dial method (2 piece of dial with a hole for the subdial). I also like how well-balanced the design of the index indicator on the side of the inner dial, simple yet classy. Most of the brands I have seen, typically will use a full red colour for the second hand or subdial hands. Not Nordgreen, what they did to maintain the beauty of the pure matte white dial without being overpowered by a solid red hand is by adding the red colour only onto the top of the hand tip. That way the hand does not overpower the aesthetic look of the dial. Creatively executed ! Kudos to the design team to consider this…

Strap : I received 2 straps from Nordgreen; a black rubber strap and a mesh gunmetal strap. Let’s start off with the rubber strap. Not many people would enjoy wearing a strap that has the brand name on the top, rather than the bottom, but I have no comment here as I do enjoy either ways. As for the mesh strap, it really goes well with the watch, giving it a formal dress theme to it. Both straps come in a quick release pin, which makes swapping of the strap easier.

My Overall Conclusion…

I definitely enjoyed wearing it the past few weeks ! It’s like looking at a piece of art (because of the Scandinavian design) and a piece of history as well (inspiration from the Danish tradition). My only feedback to the watch would have been the option to have it equipped with an automatic movement instead. Other than that, I’m giving my thumbs up to anyone who wants a chronograph watch that is not over-complicated with the subdial designs, but yet offering a classy minimalist look to it. Thank you so much to Nordgreen to share your beautifully designed watch with me. I am sure the kickstarter backers are enjoying the watch now as much as I did while writing this article.

Thanks to the team from Nordgreen, they are offering a 20% discount code just for MBWW that is available all year long ! How cool is that… The code is MBWW20.
