Independent Swiss watchmaker Formex has spent the last decade building a rock-solid reputation for rugged, high-spec tool watches that punch way above their price class. But just when you think you have a brand safely pigeonholed, they completely shift gears.
Engineering from the Inside Out: The FX01 Caliber
For CEO Raphaël Granito, tackling the ultra-thin dress watch category required rethinking the canvas entirely. To achieve a genuinely slim profile without sacrificing the convenience of automatic winding or cutting corners on performance, Formex bypassed off-the-shelf options and collaborated with neighbors Horage to implement the Caliber FX01.

Micro-rotors are historically notorious for winding inefficiency because a smaller mass has less rotational inertia. Formex solves this by utilizing an exceptionally dense tungsten micro-rotor paired with an ultra-efficient mainspring system, boosting winding efficiency by roughly 55%. Just one hour on the wrist yields up to ten hours of power reserve.
From a technical perspective, the FX01 also incorporates a flexible geartrain pinion that completely eliminates backlash. When you adjust the time, the minute hand responds instantly to the crown without that microscopic “free play” common in standard mechanical movements. Visually, the movement is stunning: galvanic black gold-plated bridges featuring vertical brushing and laser-textured cutouts, visible through the sapphire caseback.
Sculpted Fluidity in Grade 5 Titanium
The exterior of the Aria is a masterclass in ergonomics and manual finishing. Measuring 40 mm in diameter and a mere 6.9 mm thick, the entire watch and integrated bracelet tip the scales at a featherweight 78 grams.
Every single case and tapering bracelet link is milled from Grade 5 titanium and individual hand-brushed. Because the design language relies on soft, rounded, organic surfaces reminiscent of river-worn stone, automated machinery simply couldn’t preserve the warmth of the lines. Mirror-polished bevels flank the brushed surfaces, creating a surgical contrast that gives the ultra-slim piece a striking presence on the wrist.
The dial treatment is equally intentional. Stamped from a single piece of brass, it uses a concave, drop-away architecture that creates an optical illusion of deep three-dimensionality despite the case’s extreme thinness. Each beveled, rose gold-plated index sits on its own raised platform, bisected by a radial line.
Dial Variants & Availability
The Formex Aria Manufacture Chronometer debuts as an exclusive Founders Edition limited to just 100 individually numbered pieces globally for 2026. Formex is offering three distinct dial colorways inspired by natural habitats:
- Selva Green: A warm, deep forest tone with rich amber undertones glowing from the Super-LumiNova.
- Ardesia Grey: A cooler, architectural execution that evokes the shade of mountain slate wet with rain.
- Denso Blue: A dense, matte navy that absorbs light, offering stark contrast against the rose gold-colored hands and indices.
During the pre-order window opening at the end of May 2026, collectors can freely select their preferred dial color. Once the window closes, production for each colorway will match the exact order numbers, ensuring the total allocation never eclipses the 100-piece ceiling.
The Founders Edition is priced at $7,900 USD (CHF 5,900 / EUR 7,600), which includes international shipping, duties, tariffs, and a 3-year warranty. Deliveries are slated to begin in September 2026.
