This feature on Microbrand Watch World is about introducing the people behind our favourite watches to the world. This week we talk to Ben from Tempest Watches.
Tempest is without a doubt a micro brand pioneer. Until their very successful Kickstarter campaign for the Tempest Carbon, forged carbon was a material only found in very expensive luxury brand watches.
Developed for use in aerospace, exotic race cars and high end sporting equipment, forged carbon made its way into the watch industry valued for its strength and light weight. The forging process creates beautiful swirls and patterns in the material which also add to its appeal.
Tempest has three models in its catalogue, The Viking, The Commodore and the Carbon.
Tell us a little about yourself and your brand
I still remember roughly 5 years ago, a lot of micro brands were using the same cookie cutter cases and only making tweaks to the dial design. I really wanted to do something different, so I started Tempest Watches…My focus was on putting the emphasis on design details and quality over profits. There has been a lot of trial by error and learning from our mistakes. For example our first watch the Viking took 3 years in the making. Now 5 years forward, we have three models out. I have been able to work with a range of materials such as Stainless Steel/Titanium/Bronze and Forged Carbon. As a brand owner, I’ve been lucky meet a lot of other brand owners and met a lot of cool people that share my passion for watches and design.
Who is your ideal customer?
My ideal customers are anyone that share my passion for watches and design.
What motivated you to become a watchmaker?
My story is a bit cliché, I was an avid watch collector (still am) but I couldn’t find a watch that had everything I was looking for, so I started Tempest Watches.
what are you working on at the moment?
I have Carbon 2 that is now in Prototype phase, a 42mm Viking, possibility, another model with Forged Carbon and maybe something with Bronze 😉
what are your plans for the year ahead?
I have a lot of ideas and things I want to do, so you will just have to wait and see. Make sure you’re on our newsletter and keep an eye out at www.tempestwatches.com
