aNordain, a Scottish microbrand company, stands out from the crowd due to its captivating use of exquisite enamel dials. These dials are highly regarded and are considered some of the most exceptional in the watchmaking industry, surpassing even those used by more famous luxury watchmakers. The company takes pride in its name, anOrdain, which reflects the recognition it has gained for its superior craftsmanship and attention to detail. The use of these impressive enamel dials has garnered Anordain a prominent position in the realm of horology, even among established and renowned watch manufacturers. A few days ago, anOrdain announced a limited edition Model 3, in collaboration with Hodinkee.
Last week, anOrdain announced a new collaboration with non else than Hodinkee, probably the biggest luxury watches online magazine. anOrdain announced it will produce a limited edition of 25 pieces of its model 3 watch. The watches are equipped with anOrdain signature dials – hand made enamel dials, with sunburst effect. Each one of the dials is handcrafted, which makes every watch a unique piece with its own unique dial, just as a fingerprint.
The dials are hand crafted and rendered in deep shades of grey, with the new case design, that was introduced with anOrdain Model 3 watches. Hodinkee staff chose the specific color palette for the watch, ensuring it will be a perfect match to the hand engraved texture of the dial and the overall look of the watch.
At first sight, you can easily think the dials are made by Chopard, as they look very similar to the Chopard Alpine Eagle dials, which is a homage to the eagle’s Iris.
A single craftswoman is responsible for the creation of the 25 dials, which are all produced, to remind you, by hand-engraving process. Her work process includes thousands of individual hand-engravings, as the creation process of a single dial takes up to 100 work hours.
At the beginning of the process, each dial starts as a solid silver disc, which is cut by hand. The center of the dial is marked, to ensure concentricity. After the dial is cut and marked, the hand engraving process starts. The craftswoman is using a special tool called graver, drawn with absolute precision across the dial surface. This tool must be sharpened several times during the creation process of every dial, to ensure line consistency and unified look. As the graver tool cuts and polish each dial during the creation process, the final result is incomparable. anOrdain team tried different processes to try and make the sunburst effect and the unique look of the dial, but after seeing that none of the processes comes close to the amazing effect of the hand engraving, anOrdain chose to stay with the long process.
The Model 3 for Hodinkee comes in a 39mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 10.5mm. The beautiful dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with a double-sided anti-reflective coating. On the caseback of the watches we find a custom engraving, with Hodinkee name and the number of the watch within the limited edition – XX/25.
Inside the watches we find Sellita SW300 caliber, with a power reserve of 42 hours. anOrdain chose leather and suede straps for the Model 3 watches, which completes the special look of the watch.
If you’re thinking about buying one of these watches, we’re very sorry to disappoint you. The price tag of these watches was 6,000 USD, but few seconds after they were available online for purchase through Hodinkee website, all of the 25 units were sold out.
We don’t know if any more units or perhaps a second batch of the limited edition is planned, but we are pretty sure we will hear a lot more about these watches in the future.
